We have been told constantly by the media that fat is the main culprit for being overweight. Low fat foods have been promoted as the answer to our problems with weight, even today low fat products are high on the list of peoples shopping trips. What we all need to know is that when you see the words low fat, what it actually means is – the fat is removed and the product is pumped full of sugar/ and or Sweeteners, but what they fail to tell you is that what is making you fat is SUGAR and refined carbohydrates!!!!!! Low fat products make you Fat!!
Our bodies need plenty of good fats, we need fats for energy, they gives us more energy than proteins and carbs per gram. The message seems to be eliminate all fats if you want to maintian a healthy body weight! There are plenty of bad fats out there like trans fats, these should be avoided but not the good fats. Many people avoid eating Avocados, nuts, coconut milk, this is a crying shame. They are full of fats essential to the body and are delicious too, but many see them as bad because of their high fat content and they fear they will pile on the pounds. However these foods are full of essential fatty acids, which are exactly that, they are essential to the functioning of the body. These essential fats are required by the body for healthy skin and hair, brain development and clear thinking, and a clean metabolism. Lots of people are actually not consuming enough of these essential fats and that leaves your body crying out for them!!
So when you eat your low fat meal with refined carbs and you are thinking that you are being ‘good’ and won’t be putting weight on, but this is simply not true!!
When you eat an overconsumption of sugar of refined carbs, your body springs into action and your blood sugar level is elevated. The body can only store a limited amount of carbs and to ensure the blood sugar level is not at a dangerous level the body starts to convert those excess carbs/sugar into fat. It does this by releasing insulin to decline the rise in blood sugar level; however Insulin is a storage hormone which will store excess carbs/sugar as fat. So by over consuming these foods you are turning on your fat storing hormones. You will also find you get hungrier quicker due to the highs and lows of the blood sugar levels. Frequent hunger is a sign you are not feeding your body the correct nutrients. So next time you are choosing between a jacket potato and an Avocado salad…. You know now which one is better for you and will not make you put weight on.
