Here are my top tips for happiness…
1. Be in the Present
This is said so often, but there is so much truth in it. We spend such a lot of wasted time worrying about the future; whether it will work out the way we want it to, whether we will have enough money for our retirement, whether our children will pass their exams to get into the right school, the right university, and so on.
It can – and does – paralyse us with fear of the future so that we simply forget to enjoy the present and we go from one worry to the next.
The same with the past – we can hold onto past regrets, or maybe some things that have happened to us, and constantly dwelling on these things actually stops us enjoying the present.
We can’t change the past, so leave it there. The future is most definitely not in our hands, so let’s not worry about something that is outside our control, remember the future isn’t even reality as it hasn’t even happened.
2. Realise that Life can and should be Simple
We spend lots of time making things more complicated than they actually are, whether it’s business, relationships, weight loss, getting fit etc.
It’s far simpler and more effective to just understand the basics and dedicate yourself to doing them well – that’s all that is ever really needed!
3. Make life simpler!
I think this is a biggie, particularly as we get a bit older… How easy is it to become a grumpy old man or woman! We take everything so seriously!
Ask yourself does that really make you happy?
The most common regret people state is that they regret not doing something, they don’t do whatever it is they want to for fear of failure – we think we might fail because we take life’s journey so seriously!
Why do we make it such a serious journey? Let yourself go a little, be more adventurous, stop worrying what others might think, smile more, laugh lots and come on, what difference does it really make if you fail??
4. Be you
Trying to please everyone else, being the perfect wife, husband, mother, father, employee, friend – it can all get a bit exhausting, what’s so wrong with being YOU.
Stop trying to please and just be yourself, embrace who you are and those that love you will embrace who you are too!
