Well the festive season has passed us by for another year and we are all focusing on the New Year ahead and what goals we might achieve. Lots of us are embarking on weight loss, we’ve all no doubt overindulged in a little too much alcohol and food and can all feel the belt around are middle that bit tighter! For me the most telling thing has been how I have felt over the past two weeks or so.  I have felt very tired and lethargic, had no desire to exercise, I’ve had brain fog and a distinct lack of enthusiasm for anything ( except maybe another choccy or glass of wine)!!!

I, like the rest of us am tempted by all the delicious looking food and after a glass of wine or champers another one is always wanted :), but, our bodies really do let us know what is good for us and I for one, certainly do not want to continue in this ‘fog’.

During the summer i embarked on a clean eating regime, the pounds dropped off, but, the one most important side effect for me was a huge increase in energy levels! I have spent many mornings up at 5.30am working on my computer, learning new information and/or exercising and yes I felt great!

Even though as a health professional I know exactly what I should and shouldn’t be eating and drinking, I still find it hard to follow 100% of the time – life is tempting and if we did everything we were supposed to it could be a little boring!! So, the moral of this story is lets not beat ourselves up if we’ve had a few too many mince pies, but lets take a positive step towards getting back on track.  If you find the whole losing weight thing thing too much for you, you know you won’t be able to achieve it, then start with one step at a time on the road to better health. Think health not weight loss!

For example start by increasing your water intake, try and drink 2-3 ltrs of water per day (herbal teas count), when you’ve achieved that for a week or two, keep it going, make it a habit and then add your next small step. Increase your green veg, make sure you add green veg to lunch (salad) and to your evening meal every day. Already you should start to feel the benefits, now, how about having no alcohol during the week……or if that’s too big start with 2 or 3 alcohol free days, stick with it till it becomes a habit 🙂  Easy peasy, sometimes its the small steps we take that make all the difference not the big ones.  Think of the Hare and the Tortoise, don’t set yourself impossible resolutions such as  joining the gym and vowing to go every night, and stating that you’ll lose a stone in 4 weeks etc. You will fail. you’ll start to feel guilty, maybe even self loathing – surely not the greatest way to start the year? Lets start the year by being a Tortoise, make it achievable, and you will reach your goals  🙂
