This is often one of the first questions asked when you attend a business or life coaching workshop or course.

What do you want? 

I’m sure you’ve all been asked this question before and it’s a really important question to ask yourself, because if you don’t know what you really want, then how on earth can you ever achieve it?

However, I think it’s a little more complicated than that – if I ask people what they want, I will usually get a list that sounds something like this:

a nice house
more holidays
more time off work
more money
to be a successful business owner
to run my own business
to be successful at work
to be slimmer
to be fitter
to be toned
someone to share my life with
to be a great mum, partner, daughter, friend etc
to be happy

Those are a selection of the things I most commonly hear – these are the type of things people say they want.

Now, it’s widely believed that all we have to do is put what we want out there and it will magically come our way………I for one don’t believe that’s true.

I totally believe in setting intentions, working towards goals, working towards achieving what you want, I really do believe that affirmations, mantras, visualisations are great – just at the right time and only if they are in alignment with your beliefs 🙂

But, that doesn’t mean you can just sit back and say this is what I want and expect it to land on your doorstep.

Why?  Because I think we confuse what we WANT with what we CHOOSE.

‘Wants’ are simply unfulfilled desires…..yes we want to be slim but we are not, we want to be successful at work, but we are not, we want more money but we don’t have it etc….not unless we CHOOSE to.

Many of us stay at the wanting stage, but some of us move to the choose stage…..so what’s the difference?

ACTION

When we choose to do/be something, we take the action to achieve it – it’s a big, big difference to wanting.

This is not said in a judgemental or critical way, and I include myself in this too…..but look at your life, it’s all your choice.  If you want to lose weight, it has to go from a want to a choice, whereby you take the action required to achieve your choice.

It’s the same for every area of your life.

When we want to make changes, we have to make choices, otherwise we will stay stuck – it’s as simple as that, and a fact that we don’t always want to face.

I cannot tell you how many people have said to me recently, wow, I love to do the things that you are doing, I really want to have a successful business, I want to take my life to the next level, I want to be fulfilled, I want to do what I love etc etc, and I explain that of course they can do that, they can do almost anything they CHOOSE to do, but lots will stay at just the wanting stage without making a choice and taking action.

Of course though, it has to come from YOU, it’s not about wanting to change your life, it’s about choosing to change your life.  As soon as you choose, you will take action, and action is what leads to change.

I think of it this way; it’s not the destination you have to want but the journey you have to choose to get to your destination, and it helps if you LOVE that journey.  It is very rarely an easy journey either!

All of the people on my last Mindset course turned their WANTS into CHOICES, and each and every one of them has stepped outside their comfort zone and moved closer towards the life they want.  How? They took the ACTION.

It’s up to you whether you are happy to stay ‘wanting’ or you’re ready to make changes and ready to ‘choose’  – if you don’t know how, I can help show you 🙂
